Rats

The rat (Rattus norvegicus) is also known as the brown rat, the grey rat, the sewer rat, and the Norway rat. The rat has a body measuring 25 cm and a tail of about the same length. Its tail is thick and scaly. Greyish brown in colour, it weighs 350 g when fully grown. It’s only rarely seen during the day since it’s a nocturnal animal. Its presence can be noticed by its droppings, its tracks, or its tooth marks on materials. If you are still not sure about their presence, a rat control specialist could help you to find it out!

The lifestyle of the rat

Habitat

The rat can be found in urban spaces where it can find food in abundance. It regularly lives in attics and isolated areas near homes. It can also be found in sewer networks. Rats rarely live alone. Gregarious, they live in packs.

Diet

The rat is an omnivore with opportunistic tendencies—that is, it feeds on everything. It likes the organic matter contained in garbage cans, but it also feasts on furniture and electrical cables. A hungry rat can go looking for food in broad daylight.

Reproduction

Rats reproduce in large numbers. A single female can give birth to 60 babies per year. The sexual maturity of the young rats occurs between 50 and 60 days after birth. The reproductive cycle is therefore very fast, and the population can grow exponentially.

The risks associated with rats

The damage that a pack of rats can cause is not negligible. Request the services of a qualified rat control professional to exterminate them. If they attack material goods, they will leave marks from their two incisors on them in several places. They can also gnaw on pipes or electrical cables, which could cause water leaks or fires. They will also leave a large number of droppings along their way. Rats can also be harmful to your health: they can transmit diseases following a bite or due to the parasites that they carry. To minimize the risks associated with the presence of rats, a rat control specialist from ExterminaPro can set traps in appropriate locations to get rid of these harmful rodents.
